AHMEDABAD: Confusion prevailed on the IIM-A campus after the Supreme Court verdict upholding the 27% quota for OBCs in central educational institutes. This was mainly about whether the quota would apply to IIMs, because three of the five-judge bench were of the view that once an OBC student completed graduation, he or she became educationally advanced.
And that meant no OBC quota for postgrad courses, such as the management diplomas offered by the IIMs.
Although IIM officials didnt say the judgment had put these elite institutions beyond the pale of the quota regime, the admissions for this year had been put on hold. The admission lists were to be announced on Friday. Samir Barua, director of IIM-A, said: "The admissions will definitely be delayed by at least a week. We are waiting for a copy of the judgment." He said the IIMs had a plan ready for rolling out OBC quotas. About the verdict's interpretation, he said, "We do not want to come to a conclusion right now and when I discussed the issue with the other directors this afternoon, none was aware of this clause in the judgment that PG courses would not be affected by this decision."While some officials in the HRD ministry insisted that the IIMs remained within the purview of OBC quotas, no word had gone out from New Delhi to these institutes.
